Nestled in the valley along the Missouri River Fort Benton is one of the oldest Cities in Montana. Fort Benton was chartered in 1882 but before that it was established as a fur trading post in 1847 and blossomed into a thriving center of commerce. Steam boats plied the river bringing people and goods bound for the gold fields in southwest Montana. People who were traveling further west would depart the steamboats and start their overland travel on the Mullen Road to the Columbia River and Fort Walla Walla, Washington.
Freight from the steamboats was offloaded on the levee awaiting transportation to points west and south. Freight such as gold and furs were readied for shipment down river. To some Fort Benton was known as the “Worlds Innermost Port” while others look at Fort Benton as the “Birth Place of Montana”. With the arrival of the railroad Fort Benton’s prominence soon faded.
Today, Fort Benton is a thriving community, economically fed by the agricultural community surrounding the city. Our business climate is good and the City welcomes anyone who wants to make Fort Benton their home or base of operations.
The City works hard to promote economic development and is willing to work with any entity looking to locate here. It also strives to provide the residents with clean water, safe neighborhoods and streets as well as many recreational opportunities. Our parks are some of the nicest in the state and always well kept. We hope you find this website useful.
